Why can't I see the pictures on a website?

You might see a red "X" (or other placeholder) instead of a picture on a webpage for one of these reasons:

  • The link to the picture on the webpage is broken.

  • The file type of the picture isn't supported by Internet Explorer.

  • Your computer doesn't have enough disk space to store the temporary files it needs to show the pictures.

  • Internet Explorer isn't set to show pictures.

  • Internet Explorer is set to block programs that are used to display the pictures.

When a link to a picture is broken on a website, you should still be able to see other pictures either on that website or another website. If you can see other pictures, then the cause is most likely a broken link. Unless you're the website owner, this is something you probably can't fix yourself. You can try viewing the webpage at another time because it might only be a temporary problem, or you could contact the website owner to let him or her know you can't view a picture.

Internet Explorer can only display pictures or images with the following file name extensions:

File extensions

.art

.wmf

.emf

.png

.mov

.xbm

.avi

.mpg

.gif

.jpg

.mpeg

.bmp

To check the file type of a picture, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the red "X" (or placeholder) for the picture that is missing, and then click Properties.

  2. Look at the Address (URL) value and note the file name extension. For example, the Address (URL) value for a GIF picture is "gif"(.GIF).

  3. Make sure that the Address (URL) value matches one of the supported picture types listed in the table above.

If the problem is an unsupported file type, you can't resolve the problem yourself.

When you open a webpage, Internet Explorer saves temporary copies of the webpage and pictures on your computer. If your hard disk is close to being full, you might not be able to see pictures on a webpage. To determine if this is the problem, follow these steps:

  1. افتح Internet Explorer بالنقر فوق الزر ابدأصورة الزر "ابدأ"، ثم النقر فوق Internet Explorer.

  2. Click the Safety button, and then click Delete Browsing History.

  3. If you don't want to delete the cookies and files associated with websites in your Favorites list, select the Preserve Favorites website data check box.

  4. Select the check box next to each category of information you want to delete.

  5. Click Delete.

  6. Click OK.

For more information on deleting temporary files, see Delete webpage history.

If the Show Pictures option in Internet Explorer is turned off, you won't see pictures on a webpage. Here's how to make sure it's turned on:

  1. افتح Internet Explorer بالنقر فوق الزر ابدأصورة الزر "ابدأ"، ثم النقر فوق Internet Explorer.

  2. Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.

  3. Click the Advanced tab.

  4. Scroll to the Multimedia section, and then select the Show Pictures check box.

  5. Click OK.

Internet Explorer security settings can disable some programs, such as Adobe Flash or QuickTime, that are used by websites to display pictures or media. Typically, when you need a program to display pictures, you'll also receive a message identifying the program that is required. (If pictures that don't need other programs aren't displaying, either, then the program might not be the problem.) To reset Internet Explorer to the default security settings and allow these programs to run, follow these steps:

  1. افتح Internet Explorer بالنقر فوق الزر ابدأصورة الزر "ابدأ"، ثم النقر فوق Internet Explorer.

  2. Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.

  3. Click the Security tab, and then click Default Level.

  4. Click OK.
