Windows RT 8.1 includes Office Home and Student 2013 RT and is licensed only for non-commercial use (except in Japan). Certain features, macros, add-ins, and other custom programs may not work on this device. For more details, see the Office 2013 RT product page.

Windows RT 8.1 will run apps only from the Windows Store.

Windows RT 8.1 is automatically kept up-to-date by Windows Update, which can't be disabled. Internet access (with any fees that apply) will be required to update Windows RT 8.1. Windows Defender and Windows Firewall are turned on by default and can't be disabled in Windows RT 8.1.

Windows Media Center isn't available for Windows RT 8.1.

Some Windows RT 8.1 devices might include a graphics processor that supports DirectX 9. Some games and programs might require DirectX 10 to provide superior performance and graphics. DirectX can't be upgraded on Windows RT 8.1 devices.

Some Windows RT 8.1 features, such as snapping apps side by side, might require advanced hardware.

Windows RT 8.1 is compatible with mice, keyboards, printers, and other peripheral devices that are certified for Windows RT 8.1.

Internet Explorer 11 and Internet Explorer 11 for the desktop in Windows RT 8.1 don't support add-ons.

Windows RT 8.1 devices will run only the Windows RT 8.1 operating system. They can't be upgraded or changed to run any other version of Windows.

Internet access fees or other service charges might apply. The following features aren't included in Windows RT 8.1:

  • CD and DVD burning

  • HomeGroup creation

  • Document services, which includes integrated tools for faxing and scanning

  • Location-aware printing

  • Network location aware service

  • Domain join

  • Windows Media Player

  • Windows Journal

  • System image restore

  • Sticky Notes

  • Offline files

  • Sync Center
