Connect to the Internet

To get connected, you need an account with an Internet service provider (ISP). You sign up for an account with an ISP just as you do for telephone service or utilities. ISPs are usually phone companies (for a DSL or fiber optic connection), mobile phone companies (for mobile broadband), or TV providers (for a cable or satellite connection).

You'll also need some hardware. For a broadband connection, such as DSL, fiber optic, or cable, you'll need a broadband modem. This might be included as part of the start-up hardware from your ISP when you sign up for a broadband account. If you want to use mobile broadband, you'll need an external SIM or data card for your PC.

After you get your account and hardware, here's how to connect:

  • Open the Settings charm, and then tap or click the Network icon (The wireless network icon or The wired network icon ).
  • Pick the network you want to connect to, and then tap or click Connect.

Once you're connected, just open your browser or app and go.
