Boot from the media you created to install on another partition

To install Windows 8 on another partition, there must be a version of Windows already running in the partition. You must create a DVD or USB flash drive that you can boot from. If you choose to create or use an ISO file, you’ll have to burn the ISO file to a DVD. After you create the DVD or USB flash drive, you’ll boot from it, and then choose a partition to upgrade to Windows 8.

Burning the ISO file to a DVD

If you're currently running Windows Vista, you'll need DVD burning software that can convert an ISO file into installable media. On Windows 7, the easiest way to convert this file is to use the Windows Disc Image Burner (there's a link to open this after you finish creating the ISO in Windows 8 setup).

Things to keep in mind before booting from media

  • Some older PCs might not be able to boot from a USB flash drive. For more info, check the documentation that came with your PC or the manufacturer's website.

  • Write down your product key. You won't be able to install Windows without it.

To install from the DVD or the USB drive that you create

  1. Turn on your PC and insert the DVD or USB flash drive when you're ready to install Windows.

  2. Restart your PC.

  3. If you see a message asking you to “Press any key to boot from DVD,” do so. If you don't see this message, or if your current version of Windows starts over and over again, you might need to change the boot order.

    How to change the boot order

    If you restart your PC and your current version of Windows starts, you might have to change the boot order in your PC's BIOS settings so that your PC boots from the media you created. To get instructions on changing the boot order for your PC, check the documentation that came with your PC or go to the manufacturer's website.

    To change the boot order, you'll generally press a combination of keys (such as F2, F12, Delete, Esc) immediately after you turn on your PC. If your current version of Windows still starts, try again by waiting until Windows asks you to sign in, and then restart your PC again.

  4. On the Install Windows page, click Install now, and follow the steps.
