How do I remove Family Safety?

If you don't have children sharing your PC, or no longer want to monitor them, you can stop using Family Safety whenever you want. Depending on the version of Windows you’re using, you can either turn Family Safety off, or uninstall it.

To turn off Family Safety monitoring on PCs running Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1

Family Safety is built in to Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1, and can't be removed. However, you can turn Family Safety monitoring off by following these steps:

  1. On any PC, go to the Family Safety website and sign in with the Microsoft account of the parent who set up Family Safety.

  2. Tap or click the primary parent.

  3. Tap or click Remove family member, and then tap or click Remove and leave Family Safety.

To uninstall Family Safety from PCs running Windows 7 or Windows Vista

In order to remove Family Safety in Windows 7 and Windows Vista, you need to uninstall the Family Safety Filter from every PC you've installed it on, and then remove the primary parent's account from the Family Safety website.

  1. Click the Start button Picture of the Start button, click Control Panel, and then, under Programs, click Uninstall a program.
  2. Click Windows Essentials.

  3. Click Uninstall (or Uninstall/Change). Click Continue if prompted.

  4. Select the check box next to Family Safety, and then click Continue.

  5. Follow the instructions on your screen.

  6. After the Family Safety Filter has been uninstalled, restart the PC.

  7. On any PC, go to the Family Safety website and sign in with the Microsoft account of the parent who installed Family Safety.

  8. Select the primary parent.

  9. Select Remove family member, and then select Remove and leave Family Safety.

To uninstall Family Safety from PCs running Windows XP

In order to remove Family Safety in Windows XP, you need to uninstall the Family Safety Filter from every PC you've installed it on, and then remove the primary parent's account from the Family Safety website.

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.

  2. In the Currently installed programs box, click Windows Essentials, and then click Remove. Click Continue if prompted.

  3. Select the check box next to Family Safety, and then click Continue.

  4. Follow the instructions on your screen.

  5. After the Family Safety Filter has been uninstalled, restart the PC.

  6. On any PC, go to the Family Safety website and sign in with the Microsoft account of the parent who installed Family Safety.

  7. Select the primary parent.

  8. Select Remove family member, and then select Remove and leave Family Safety.
