If your device syncs manually, you must create a list of files and playlists that you want to sync each time you want to make changes to the files on your device, and you must manually remove files from your device. You can also shuffle songs on your device. This is useful if you want Windows Media Player to select a random list of songs from the Player library to sync to your device.

To add or remove items from a device

  1. Start the Player, connect your device to your computer, and then click the Sync tab.

  2. If more than one device is connected, in the Navigation pane, click the device.

  3. Drag files, albums, and/or playlists to the List pane to add them to the list of items to sync.

    To select multiple adjacent items, press and hold the SHIFT key while selecting. To select nonadjacent items, press and hold the CTRL key while selecting.

  4. To remove items, click the item in the List pane, and then click Remove from List.

  5. In the List pane, verify that the list of items to sync contains the items you want and that they all fit on the device.

  6. Click Start Sync.

To shuffle music on a device

  1. Start the Player, connect your device to your computer, and then click the Sync tab.

  2. Click the arrow below the Sync tab, point to the device, and then click Shuffle.

    In the List pane, click the Shuffle music link to add a shuffled set of songs from your library to the List pane. Add or remove any songs you want, and then click Shuffle Now.

To format a device

  1. Start the Player, and then connect your device to your computer.

  2. To format the device, or to format storage media that is inserted in the device, click the arrow below the Sync tab, point to the device, and then click Format. Note that it may not be possible to use the Player to format every device; see your device documentation for more information.

    Warning

    • Formatting erases all data on the device.
