First steps with Windows 7

First steps with Windows 7

Taking your just-purchased PC out of its box can be a joyous occasion, one that evokes the same sensations as that new car smell. It’s a clean slate, a chance to reorganize your files, photos, and everything else that you’ve crammed onto your computer.

And yet, when you face down that gleaming new piece of machinery, it can be hard to know where to start. We put together this checklist to help you get up and running. For even more help, visit the Getting started with Windows 7 page.

First-week checklist

  • Connect to the Internet. The Connect to the Internet wizard guides you through the steps of setting up your connection. If you have a laptop, you'll also be able to see a list of available wireless networks and connect in a few clicks, no matter where you go.

  • Transfer your stuff. Windows Easy Transfer makes it a breeze to bring over your files, email, pictures, and settings from your old PC. It's easier to use than in previous versions, and includes a file explorer so you can choose the files you want to copy.

  • Set up security. From firewalls to virus protection to guarding against spyware and malware, there's a bunch to think about here—but Windows 7 offers lots of ways to help keep your PC safer and running smoothly. Get started with protecting your computer.

  • Create a home network. There are a few different ways to link up the computers in your house—ethernet, wireless, and so on. Start here to learn about the choices, the hardware, and how to get set up.

  • Set up a wireless network. It's the ultimate in networking flexibility, especially when you put it together with Windows 7 features like HomeGroup. And it's not as hard as you think to get set up.

  • Parental controls. Parental Controls can help set limits on the games kids can play, the programs they can use, and when they can use the PC. Best of all, you don't have to look over their shoulders every minute.

  • Back it up. Most of us know that backing up our files is a good idea, but some of us don't find time to do it as often as we should. Backup and Restore solves this nagging problem with a "set it and forget it" approach: once it's set up, it's automatic.

Dive into the features

Eager to go deeper into what you can do with Windows 7? Read on for a look at the latest, greatest features—then browse Explore Windows for ideas on how to use them.

Start it up

The newly customizable Start menu shows you (and gets you to) the files and programs you use most. Libraries sort your files into Documents, Music, Pictures, and Video, so it’s easy to find exactly what you need (and you can create more libraries to suit your needs). And the improved Windows Search helps you find photos, programs, email, and documents—fast.

Check out the new desktop

Once you find your folders, it’s time to take the new desktop for a spin. Snap makes it easy to open two windows side by side to compare them. Jump Lists put the websites and documents that you use the most in one place, so you don’t have to spend time searching. Shake your mouse and the other windows fall away, allowing you to concentrate on the webpage or document you need the most.

Tour the taskbar

Now you can pin programs and files to the taskbar, so you can open them in just one click. If you're using Internet Explorer 9, you can even pin websites. Preview webpages and live video on your taskbar before opening them, or save time by using the taskbar to close windows and turn off your music.

Personalize it

No one wants a dull desktop. With Windows 7, you can download free themes that include images and sounds for your computer, as well as gorgeous wallpaper images. Or use a desktop gadget to stay social with Facebook and Twitter. It’s all about you.

Stay social and share

Windows Live Essentials gives you several great programs—Windows Live Movie Maker, Photo Gallery, Mail, and more—in one free download. You also get Windows Live Messenger for video chat and photo sharing—and you can even play games with your friends right in Messenger. Farmville, anyone?

Create a HomeGroup

Keep everyone on the same page by connecting two or more PCs running Windows 7 with HomeGroup, then share printers, photos, and files. Concerned about the kids? Privacy settings mean you can keep children out of the folders they don’t need to see.

More media, more places

Turn your computer into a TV with the latest version of Windows Media Center so that you can record and watch your favorite shows. Access your media library over the Internet with Remote Media Streaming. And stream music and video around the house with Play To in Windows Media Player 12.
