Share your trip with photo emails—no matter where you are

I’m passionate about travel and photography, as I spend most months of the year on the high seas, taking hundreds of photos around the globe. As a Techspert for Holland America Cruise Line, I teach guests how to use Windows 7 and Windows Live in the Digital Workshop classroom. Their number one request: How do we send photos?

I’ll be the first to admit that sending photos through email can seem challenging and even tedious at times. My photos start around 27.5 MB each, so I used to spend a lot of time after a day in port resizing and sending multiple messages.

Windows Live Photo Gallery, paired with Windows Live Hotmail or Windows Live Mail, has transformed how I send photo emails. Instead of text with space-hogging attachments, I can send an attractive album containing up to 41 photo thumbnails.

To see the automatically resized, actual photos, the recipient needs to click the View Slide Show message link. This opens a browser window and displays the photos in an online slide show with captions (if I added any captions). The recipient may also download the images directly from the web if they prefer to. No more forcing huge attachments into the inboxes of my family and friends!

Let me walk you through how I do this:

Using Windows Live Mail

I start all of my photo-related projects in Windows Live Photo Gallery. It’s part of Windows Live Essentials—free, downloadable software for Windows Vista and Windows 7, which also includes Windows Live Mail and several other useful programs.

  1. Open Windows Live Photo Gallery. I find it much easier to select photos here because I can see them easily and find them quickly, without digging through folders.

  2. Select photos from a folder. (Here's a tip: Holding the Ctrl key and clicking individual photos allows you to pick more than one photo at a time.)

  3. See the icon bar across the top of the program? That’s the ribbon. Look for Photo email (it’s the second-to-last feature on the ribbon’s Home tab). Click the Photo email icon on the top half of this button.

  4. If you have Windows Live Mail installed, it will now open a new message, with the photos included in an album of thumbnails that you can see inside your new message.

  5. The cursor is active, so I usually start writing my message. I can use Text edit on the top of the window to change the font, color, and text alignment of my email, add emoticons, and spell check.

  6. Next, I name the photo album by clicking Enter album name here. This album will appear in your Windows Live SkyDrive after the photos finish uploading.

  7. After naming the album, I click Photo Album Tools to get more options. If you don’t see it at the top of the message, click anywhere inside the album in your message, and this tab should appear. Here I can choose a photo album style, shuffle the album for a more interesting layout, choose the photo upload size, change the privacy settings, and determine how long the album should stay in Windows Live SkyDrive before expiring.

  8. After making my photo album choices, I enter the recipient’s email address, write a subject line, and click Send.

It also works in Hotmail

You can also send photos using Windows Live Hotmail. The steps are fairly similar:

  1. In Hotmail, click New to create a new message.

  2. Type an email address or click To and choose recipients from your contact list. Then add a subject.

  3. Click Photos, and then click New album.

  4. Select the photos that you want to create an album with, and then click Open. Hotmail will upload and save the photos to Windows Live SkyDrive.

  5. If you want to change the album’s expiration date or other details, click Edit album details. You can also preview your slide show before you send it.

  6. Type a message, and then click Send.

Now instead of sending only a few photos per message, I can send up to 41 thumbnails per message. This saves me a lot of time—time that I now spend back in port exploring new places and making new images! More efficient, don’t you agree?
