View, pause, or cancel printing

After your document or photo has started to print, you can pause or cancel it in the print queue.

The print queue shows you what's printing or waiting to print. It also displays handy information such as print status, who's printing what, and how many pages are left to be printed.

See what's printing

You can see what's printing—or waiting to print—in the print queue. Documents that are listed first will be the first to print.

  1. Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.

  2. Click your printer's icon, and then click See what's printing on the command bar.

Tip

  • To quickly view the print queue, double-click the printer icon Picture of the printer icon in the notification area in the notification area.

Cancel printing

If you've printed something by mistake, you can cancel it, even if printing has already started.

To cancel printing an individual document

  1. Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.

  2. Click your printer's icon, and then click See what's printing on the command bar.

  3. Right-click the document waiting to be printed, click Cancel, and then click Yes to confirm.

To cancel all printing

To cancel all documents waiting to be printed, you must have permission to manage documents on the printer.

  1. Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.

  2. Click your printer's icon, and then click See what's printing on the command bar.

  3. Click the Printer menu, click Cancel All Documents, and then click Yes to confirm. The item currently printing might finish, but the remaining items will be canceled.

Note

  • To view your printer permissions, right-click the printer that you're using, click Printer properties, click the Security tab, and then click your user name. If your computer is on a domain, printer permissions might be controlled by your administrator.

Pause printing

You can pause and resume printing a single document—or multiple documents in the queue.

To pause or resume printing an individual document

  1. Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.

  2. Click your printer's icon, and then click See what's printing on the command bar.

  3. Right-click the document waiting to be printed, and then click Pause or Resume.

To pause or resume all printing

To pause someone else's document, you must have permission.

  1. Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.

  2. Click your printer's icon, and then clickSee what's printing on the command bar.

  3. Click the Printer menu, and then click Pause Printing. To resume printing, click Pause Printing again.

Note

  • To view your printer permissions, right-click the printer that you're using, click Printer properties, click the Security tab, and then click your user name. If your computer is on a domain, printer permissions might be controlled by your administrator.

Restart printing

If you suddenly realize you're printing in the wrong color ink or on the wrong size paper, you can start over from the beginning.

  1. Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.

  2. Click your printer's icon, and then click See what's printing on the command bar.

  3. Right-click the document you want to reprint, and then click Restart.

Reorder the print queue

If you're printing multiple items, you can change the order in which they print.

  1. Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.

  2. Open the print queue by selecting your printer's icon and then clicking See what's printing on the command bar.

  3. Right-click the item you want to reorder, and then click Properties.

  4. Click the General tab, drag the Priority tab left or right to change its print order, and then click OK. (Items with higher priority print first.)
