Find & organize

Pictures library

Organize your photos, music, and videos

If you have lots of digital pictures, music, and videos on your PC, you can make sure they're organized so that you can always find them when you want them.

Put your files in a library

Windows comes with four libraries: Documents, Music, Pictures (for pictures and home videos), and Videos (for movies and TV shows). When your files are organized into those libraries, they’ll show up automatically in the Photos, Music, and Video apps. Plus you'll be able to see them in one place whenever you open that library.

If you already keep your media files in certain folders on your PC, don't worry—there's no need to move them. Just add the folders to a library.

If you import a lot of photos, videos, and music, you can choose what happens when you connect a phone or camera or insert a CD. For example, you can use the Photos app to import pictures and videos but use File Explorer to import your music.

Here’s how:

  • Open AutoPlay by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering AutoPlay in the search box, tapping or clicking Settings, and then tapping or clicking AutoPlay.

  • Find the device or type of media you usually import, and then choose the action you want.

Keep the files you want to share, send, and stream on your PC

If you have photos that you want to share with your family or a home movie you want to stream on your TV, you might want to keep them on your PC instead of storing them on another drive or device. It's easier to share, send, and play files that are stored locally.

Tag photos so you can find what you're looking for

When you import new photos to your PC, you can add tags with Photo Gallery so they are easier to find later—tags have info about things like the date or place the photos were taken. And in Photo Gallery, you can also add people tags so you can see all the photos you have of a specific person.
