Monitoring Internet Information Services (IIS) servers, sites, and applications

Keeping your web server running efficiently requires continuous monitoring. Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 includes the following features to help you monitor your web server, websites, and web applications:

Tracing failed requests

When a user informs you about a problem with your web server, frequently the first thing you do is try to reproduce the problem. Sometimes you can't reproduce the problem, so you spend extra time figuring out what's wrong. A new feature in IIS 7.0 helps you trace failed requests in real time and puts the request data in an XML-formatted log file. Failed request tracing can reduce the time that you spend trying to reproduce problems—and the time you spend fixing them. For more information about how to configure failed request tracing rules, go to IIS 7.0: Configuring Tracing for Failed Requests on the Microsoft TechNet website.

Monitoring worker processes

IIS 7.0 gives you real-time information about the status of application pools, worker processes, sites, application domains for applications, and even running requests. This information can help you locate problems such as stalled applications or memory leaks on your web server.

For more information about monitoring worker processes, go to IIS 7.0: Monitoring Worker Processes and Currently Executing Requests on the Microsoft TechNet website.

Logging requests to the web server

If you want IIS to keep a record of the activity on your web server, you can set up logging. Logging can track many types of information, such as requests for webpages or the identities of users who have visited a website or who have run a web application. Logging helps enhance security by recording whether an unauthorized person has tried to connect to your web server or its sites and applications.

For more information about how to configure logging, go to IIS 7.0: Configuring Logging on the Microsoft TechNet website.
