The tabs bar shows sneak peeks of the webpages you have open, and lets you easily open a new tab, close tabs, or switch between tabs.

View the tabs bar

To view the tabs bar in Internet Explorer, swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or right-click). All the tabs you have open will be shown in the tabs bar.

Open a new tab

To open a new tab, open the tabs bar, and tap or click the New tab button New Tab . You can also press Ctrl+T to open a new tab.

Open an InPrivate tab

Open a new InPrivate Browsing tab by swiping up from the bottom of the screen (or right-clicking). On the tabs bar, tap or click the Tab tools button Tab tools , and then New InPrivate tab.

Close tabs

To close individual tabs, in the tabs bar, tap or click the Close button Close in the lower right corner of the tab you want to close.

Open and close tabs in the desktop

To open a new tab in Internet Explorer, tap or click the New tab button on the address bar. You can close individual tabs by tapping or clicking the Close button on the tab you'd like to close. Clean up your address bar quickly by closing all tabs except one. To do this, press and hold (or right-click) the tab you want to keep open, and then click Close other tabs.

When you open a new tab, you'll see the new tab page. From the new tab page you can quickly open sites you frequently visit, or do any of these options:

  • Open a new page by entering or pasting an address into the address bar.

  • Hide info about frequently visited sites by clicking Hide sites. Restore info by clicking Show sites.

  • Turn on InPrivate Browsing by clicking Start InPrivate Browsing.

  • Reopen tabs you've just closed by clicking Reopen closed tabs.

  • Reopen tabs from your last browsing session by clicking Reopen last session.

  • Open Suggested Sites by clicking Discover other sites you might like.

If you'd rather see a home page when you open a new tab, do this:

  1. Open the desktop, and then tap or click the Internet Explorer icon on the taskbar.

  2. Tap or click the Tools button Tools, then tap or click Internet options.
  3. On the General tab, under Tabs, tap or click Tabs.

  4. Select Your first home page as the page to open when a new tab is opened, and then tap or click OK.
