Performing a custom installation of Windows 7

You can't directly upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. You'll need to perform a custom installation. A custom installation doesn't keep any of your files, programs, or settings so you'll need to:

  • Save your files and settings on an external hard drive. Windows Easy Transfer is a free tool that will help you save your files and settings on an external hard drive and move them back to your computer.

  • Gather the installation discs and product keys for the programs that you want to use with Windows 7.
