To set permissions and share a link with email

The Send email option is one way to set permissions and share a link to files or a folder in an email. You can choose whether people can only view your files or view and edit them. For increased security, you can also have recipients sign in to view the files.

  1. Go to SkyDrive.

You might need to sign in with your Microsoft account.

  2. Go to the file or folder you'd like to share, and expand the rightmost pane if it's collapsed.

  3. Under Sharing, click Share or Share folder.

  4. In the Send email tab, add the email addresses, contact names, or a group you'd like to share with.

  5. Add an optional message, choose the permission level you prefer, and decide whether the people you're sharing with must sign in to access your file or folder.

  6. Click Send to save the permission settings and to send an email with a link to the file or folder.

To set permissions and get a link to share

Posting links to your files on a blog or website is a useful way to share files and photos with a large group of people. To do this, you'll need to create a public link in SkyDrive.

  1. Go to SkyDrive.

You might need to sign in with your Microsoft account.

  2. Go to the folder, photo, or file you'd like to share, and expand the rightmost pane if it's collapsed.

  3. Under Sharing, click Share or Share folder.

  4. On the Get a link tab, choose the type of link and permission level you prefer . The permissions for your files or folder are automatically updated once you get a link.

    View only
People who follow this link can only view your files or folder. It's important to remember that anyone who has this link will be able to view your files or folder, not just the people with whom you share the link. So if someone shares the link again, people you might not intend to share your files or folders with will have access to them.

    View and edit
People who have this link can view and edit your files or folder.

    Public
A public link lets anyone view, but not edit, the files and folders you share online. Public links also make it possible for anyone to search and find your publicly shared files. This is a convenient way to share files with lots of people, but it’s important to make sure that you only create public links to files and folders that you do want people to find easily online.

To change permissions to a file or folder that's already shared

  1. Go to SkyDrive.

You might need to sign in with your Microsoft account.

  2. Go to the file or folder you'd like to share, and expand the rightmost pane if it's collapsed.

  3. If the file is already shared, you'll find a list of people with their permission settings under Sharing. Click the drop-down for the person whose permissions you'd like to change and select either Can view or Can edit. People with Can view permission can only view files, but not change them. People with Can edit permission can view and edit files. Your changes will be saved automatically.

  4. To remove someone from the list of people with permissions to a file or folder, click Remove permissions. Your changes will be saved automatically.

Note

Note

  • Please respect copyright and be careful what you share online. Copying or sharing unauthorized materials violates the Microsoft service agreement .

  • If your Microsoft account is set with Family Safety, and your parent or guardian has turned off contact management, you can only share files with people who are already on your contact list, and you can't create public folders.
