Install the Windows Platform Update

If you tried to install Windows Live Essentials but you received a message that you need to install the Windows Platform Update first, you can do so using these steps.

The Windows Platform Update is a free update that brings select features of Windows 7 to Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. It's a collection of several updates—called runtime libraries and application programming interfaces (APIs)—that allow programs to utilize better graphics, automation, animation, and integration with mobile devices.

To install the Windows Platform Update

  1. In Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, click StartPicture of the Start button. In the search box, type Windows Update, and then click Windows Update.
  2. In the navigation pane, click Check for updates.

  3. When updates are found, click View available updates.

  4. In the list, select one of the following updates. (Only the update that applies to your operating system will be listed.)

    • Platform Update for Windows Vista (KB971644)

    • Platform Update for Windows Vista x64-based Systems (KB971644)

    • Platform Update for Windows Server 2008 (KB971644)

    • Platform Update for Windows Server 2008 x64-Edition (KB971644)

  5. Click Install. You might need to restart your computer to complete the installation.
