Disconnect from the Internet

If you have a dial-up connection to the Internet, you have to disconnect each time when you're finished using the Internet. If you have a broadband connection, you're always connected to the Internet, whether you're using the web or not. So you just have to close your web browser to end your Internet session, but your computer will still be connected to the Internet.

To disconnect from a dial-up connection

To disconnect from a dial-up connection, look for a button that says "Disconnect." You can also follow this step:

  • Click the connection icon Picture of the connection icon in the notification area, click Connect or disconnect, select your Internet connection, and then click Disconnect.

To disable a broadband connection

Although broadband connections are always "on," occasionally you might need to disable the connection for troubleshooting purposes.

  1. Open Network Connections by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, clicking Network and Sharing Center, and then clicking Manage network connections.

  2. Right-click the broadband connection, and then click Disable. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
