Giving a presentation over a network

Windows makes it easy to give a presentation from any computer, whether it's the desktop computer in your office or the mobile PC that you use when traveling. By using the Connect to a Network Projector wizard, you can connect to any available network projector over a wireless or a wired network.

A network projector is a shared resource that you can access from your mobile PC, similar to using a printer on a network.

Connect to a network projector

Open the Connect to a Network Projector wizard by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, and then clicking Connect to a Network Projector.

The wizard offers two ways to connect to a projector.

  • Choose one from a list of available projectors. When you search for a projector, a list of available network projectors appears. As many as five projectors that you have used recently appear at the top of the list.

  • Enter the network address of the projector. You can enter the address as a URL (a web address, such as http://server/projectors/projector_1) or as a UNC (Universal Naming Convention) path (for example, \\server\projectors\projector_1).

Security-enabled and unsecured projectors

When the Connect to a Network Projector wizard displays the available projectors, an icon appears next to each projector, indicating whether the projector is security-enabled or unsecured.

Whether you choose a projector by selecting it from the list of available projectors or by entering its address, you must enter a password if the projector is security-enabled.

Pause or disconnect from a presentation

After you finish using the wizard to set up your presentation display, the Network Presentation dialog box opens and then minimizes on the Windows taskbar. Click the Network Presentation icon in the taskbar to open the dialog box. When the Network Presentation dialog box is opened, you can move it anywhere on the desktop.

The Network Presentation dialog box includes the following buttons:

  • Pause/Resume. Click to switch between pausing and continuing the presentation.

    • Click Pause to temporarily suspend the presentation and display a still frame on the screen.

    • Click Resume to continue the presentation from the point where you paused it.

  • Disconnect. Click Disconnect to close the Network Presentation dialog box and end the presentation by closing the network connection between your computer and the projector.
