Preview the appearance of a printed webpage
The information in this Help topic applies to Windows Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Internet Explorer 8.
When you print a webpage, Internet Explorer automatically scales it to fit within the margins of your paper. This sometimes causes the page to be reduced in size. Internet Explorer also reduces the size of a page slightly if a single line of text (sometimes called an orphan) would print on its own page. You can use Print Preview to see how a printed webpage will look and to adjust page orientation, scaling, and margins. For information about troubleshooting printing problems, see Printing webpages: frequently asked questions.
Note
This information applies to Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8 running on Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008,Windows XP Service Pack 2, and Windows Server 2003.

-
Go to the webpage you want to print.
-
Click the arrow to the right of the Print button
in the main browser window, and then click Page Setup.
-
In the Page Setup dialog box, click the lists under Headers and Footers, and then click the items you want to print.
Creating headers and footers in Internet Explorer 8
The following table describes how to display different kinds of information in the headers or footers of printed webpages. Unlike earlier versions of Internet Explorer, you don't need to use special codes to build your headers or footers. You only need to choose an option from one of the header or footer lists in the Page Setup dialog box.

Creating custom headers and footers
You can create your own custom header or footer text by using ampersand codes. To create a fully customized header or footer, click one of the lists under Headers and Footers in the Page Setup dialog box, and then click Custom. In the Custom dialog box, type your own custom text along with these codes. For example, to print the date and city on the document you might type Printed in Seattle on &D. The following table shows the ampersand codes that are available:

Notes
-
The Change Print Size feature might not work properly if the webpage you're trying to print specifies the exact location where text should print on the page.
-
If you go to a webpage and open Print Preview before the page is fully loaded in the browser, the page will appear blank in Print Preview.
-
If you change printing options (such as paper orientation) by using the buttons in Print Preview, those changes will be in effect temporarily (until you close Internet Explorer). To make permanent changes to your printing options (for example, to change the default paper size), make changes in Page Setup. For more information, see Choosing print options.
