You can change the default printer name, which is typically the manufacturer name and printer model, to a name that can help you or other users better recognize the printer. On a network, for example, you might rename a printer to indicate the room or floor number where the printer is located. You might also rename a printer to indicate its capabilities, such as printing in color or black ink only.
To rename a printer, you must have permission to manage the printer. You probably have permission if you installed the printer, or if the person or system administrator who installed the printer gave you permission. You might also have permission if you are a member of the administrators group for the computer. Administrators have permission to manage printers by default.
To view your printer permissions, right-click the printer that you're using, click Properties, click the Security tab, and then click your user name.
Open Printers by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, and then clicking Printers.
Click the printer that you want to rename, and then click Rename this printer on the toolbar.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Next to the printer's icon, enter the new printer name.
