What happened to the Internet Explorer Mail button?

This information applies to Windows Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Internet Explorer 8.

In Internet Explorer 8, the Mail button has been replaced by the Read Mail button, which works similarly. The Read Mail button is not displayed on the Command bar by default, but you can turn it on by following the steps below.

To add the Read Mail button to the Command bar

Use the Read Mail button to open your e‑mail program.

  1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Internet Explorer.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • In Internet Explorer 8, right-click the Command bar, point to Customize, and then click Add or Remove Commands.

    • In Internet Explorer 7, right-click the Command bar, point to Customize Command Bar, and then click Add or Remove Commands.

  3. Under Available toolbar buttons, click Read Mail, and then click Add.

  4. Click Close.

You should see your changes immediately. If the Command bar has a lot of buttons, you might need to resize it to see them all. To learn how to resize the Command bar, see Customize the Internet Explorer toolbars.

To send a link or webpage by e‑mail

The Mail button in previous versions of Internet Explorer contained options to send a webpage link or a copy of the page itself in e‑mail. The Read Mail button does not contain these options, but you can still e‑mail webpages and links by following the steps below:

  1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Internet Explorer.

  2. Click the Page button, and then do one of the following:

    • Click Send Page by E‑mail.

    • Click Send Link by E‑mail.
