Why are some visual elements being automatically turned off?

If you receive a message that some visual elements, such as window frame transparency, have been turned off, or if you receive a message that the color scheme has been changed to Windows Vista Basic, one of the following might have happened:

A program that you're running is incompatible with the Windows Aero color scheme. When you run a program that is incompatible with the Windows Aero color scheme, some visual elements are automatically turned off. When the program is no longer running, the visual elements that were turned off will be turned on again automatically.

Your computer does not have enough memory to run all of the programs that you have open and also run the Windows Aero color scheme. Try closing some windows or changing your color scheme to Windows Vista Basic. If Windows automatically changed your color scheme to Windows Vista Basic, and you want to change it back to Windows Aero after closing some windows, follow these steps.

  1. Open Appearance Settings by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, clicking Personalization, and then clicking Window Color and Appearance. If the Appearance Settings dialog box is not displayed, at the bottom of the page, click Open classic appearance properties.

  2. In the Color scheme list, click Windows Aero, and then click OK.

Your computer's hardware configuration or screen resolution was changed. If you changed your screen resolution, video card, or monitor setup, your computer might no longer meet the minimum recommendations for running Windows Aero. For more information, see Troubleshoot problems with Windows Aero.
