Windows Update error 80246007

If you receive Windows Update error 80246007 while downloading or checking for updates, you might need to change or restart the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). This service allows Windows Update to download updates to your computer.

To change or restart the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

  1. Open Administrative Tools by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Administrative Tools.

  2. Double-click Services. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  3. Right-click the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) service, and then click Properties.

  4. On the General tab, next to Startup type, make sure that Automatic (Delayed Start) is selected. If it is not, select it and then click Apply.

  5. Next to Service status, check to see if the service is started. If it is not, click Start.

If the problem persists after you take these steps, go to the Windows Update Support Center website to try to find more information about the error code or to request support by e‑mail.
