Turn your Xbox into a Windows Media Center Extender

You can have room-to-room entertainment, if you have Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and a Microsoft Xbox 360. What's the secret? The Windows Media Center Extender for Xbox kit, which contains software and hardware that can turn your existing Xbox console into a Media Center Extender.

There are two steps to getting your Xbox and Windows Media Center up and running. Here's what you'll need to get started.

  • A PC running Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

  • An Xbox 360 with the Xbox 360 Wireless Media Adapter

  • A wired or wireless home network

  • A broadband Internet connection

To connect Xbox 360 to Windows Media Center

  1. Enter your security password information into the Xbox 360 console so the network can recognize it.

  2. Navigate to Network Settings in the System section of the Xbox 360 dashboard.

  3. Select the Edit Settings option, scroll down and choose Wireless Mode, and then enter the information for your secure wireless network.

  4. With your code in hand and sitting at your Media Center PC, log on to the Xbox 360 PC setup site at Xbox 360 PC setup and then follow the on-screen instructions.

To set up the Windows Media Center Extender for Xbox kit

  1. The PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and the Xbox console must be connected to either a wired (Ethernet) or wireless network. Before you continue, the network must be working.

  2. Insert the batteries in the Media Center Extender for Xbox remote control.

  3. Insert the infrared receiver into a game port on the front of the Xbox console.

  4. Install the Media Center Extender for Xbox Setup CD in the host Media Center PC.

  5. Follow the setup instructions on the screen. You'll need to write down your setup key and have the Media Center Extender CD ready.
