These days the office comes in many guises—the quiet corner of a coffee shop or lobby, a back porch or park bench.
Wherever you take your laptop and work, Windows 7 is designed to make it easier for you to get things done.
Your first task on the road is typically getting online. Windows 7 makes it easier. It includes better support for mobile broadband technologies such as 3G. Just insert the wireless data card and you’re up and running.
Another nifty innovation: View Available Networks. Located on the taskbar, it shows you all your networking options—Wi‑Fi, mobile broadband, dial-up, or corporate VPN—in a single glance. Two clicks, and you’re connected.
Do you use one printer at home and another at work? It's a chore to constantly tell your PC which printer to use. In Windows 7, you don't have to. Location-aware printing, available only in the Professional and Ultimate editions, remembers which printers you routinely use and automatically routes your documents to the right one.
Windows 7 is also designed to help you wring more life from laptop batteries. For example, it cuts off the power to your Ethernet jack when you’re not using it and automatically dims your LCD screen—a huge power drain—if the computer sits idle too long.
We know you can’t be too careful with your work. So Windows 7 includes numerous security enhancements. It makes better use of laptop fingerprint scanners and includes new features like BitLocker To Go. Available in the Ultimate edition, BitLocker To Go encrypts USB flash drives and other portable storage to help protect them from theft or accidental loss.
