Real-time protection

Real-time protection is how Microsoft Security Essentials alerts you when potential threats such as viruses and spyware are trying to install themselves or run on your PC. The moment this happens, you’ll see a message in the notification area to the far right of the taskbar

Real-time protection is at the heart of Security Essentials, so it should always stay turned on. If real-time protection doesn’t turn on, stay on, or start automatically, follow these steps:

Troubleshooting real-time protection

Step 1: Completely remove all existing Internet security programs, antivirus programs, and firewall software including, Microsoft Security Essentials

  • You must first completely remove any existing Internet security programs, antivirus programs, and firewall software, including Microsoft Security Essentials, from your PC. To do so, follow the instructions in the topic How do I uninstall antivirus or antispyware programs?

Step 2: Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials

Step 3: Contact support
