How to use Accelerators in Internet Explorer 9

You can select text on a webpage and use add-ons called Accelerators to perform many common tasks, such as mapping a street address or translating text into a different language. You can also choose the web services or websites that Accelerators use to handle different types of tasks. Here's how:

  1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type Internet Explorer, and then, in the list of results, click Internet Explorer.

  2. Go to the webpage that contains the text that you want to use with an Accelerator, and then select the text.

  3. Click the Accelerator button Picture of the Accelerator button to display a list of default Accelerators.

    You can also point to All Accelerators to see a complete list of Accelerators available on your computer.

  4. Click an Accelerator, and then do one or both of the following:

    • To see a preview of information or content, point to an Accelerator on the list.

    • To open an Accelerator's web service on a webpage, click the Accelerator on the list.

To get new Accelerators

  1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type Internet Explorer, and then, in the list of results, click Internet Explorer.

  2. Click the Tools button Picture of the Tools button, and then click Manage add-ons.

  3. In the Manage add-ons dialog box, under Add-on Types, click Accelerators to display a list of your current Accelerators.

  4. At the bottom of the screen, click Find More Accelerators.

  5. On the Internet Explorer service provider webpage, click a category, and then click the service you want.

  6. In the Add Accelerator dialog box, do one of the following:

    • To add a new Accelerator, click Add. When you add an Accelerator, you can also select the Make this my default provider for this Accelerator Category check box.

    • To replace an existing Accelerator, click Replace.

    • Click Cancel.

To manage your Accelerators

  1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type Internet Explorer, and then, in the list of results, click Internet Explorer.

  2. Click the Tools button Picture of the Tools button, and then click Manage Add-ons.

  3. In Manage Add-ons, under Add-on Types, click Accelerators to display a list of your current Accelerators.

  4. Click an Accelerator in the list, and then do one or more of the following:

    • To view the home page for the Accelerator service, the site it was installed from, and its current status information, select an Accelerator in the list.

    • To change the status of an Accelerator, select an Accelerator, and then click the Enable, Disable, Set as default, or Remove as default buttons.

    • To change the category of an Accelerator, select an Accelerator, and then, in the bottom pane, next to the Category field, click change .

    • To find and add more Accelerators, in the bottom pane, click Find More Accelerators.

    • To delete an Accelerator, click the Remove button.

  5. Click Close.
