Why can't I right-click a picture to edit it?

If you upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7 and Windows Photo Gallery was the default program used to open pictures, you might get the following error when you right-click a photo and click Edit:

“There was a problem starting C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Gallery\PhotoViewer.dll. The specified module could not be found.”

To change your default photo editor

You can work around this issue by following these steps:

  1. Open the Pictures library by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Pictures.

  2. Click the picture you want to edit.

  3. On the toolbar, click the down arrow next to Preview, and then click Choose default program.

  4. In the Open with dialog box, click a photo editing program.

  5. Select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.

The next time you right-click the same kind of picture file and click Edit on the shortcut menu, it will open in the selected photo program.

Note

If you don’t have another photo editing or graphics program installed, you can use Paint, which is included with Windows.
