Movie Moments helps you turn your videos into short movies you’ll love to share. You can trim scenes to keep only your favorite parts, highlight key moments with stylish captions, and add music to set the mood. Then, share the finished movie without leaving the app.

This app is meant for making quick, fun changes to short videos. The final movies are all 60 seconds or less. If you're interested in making more advanced edits or working with longer videos, search the Windows Store on your PC for other video editing apps or download Movie Maker. Note that Movie Maker isn't available for Windows RT 8.1.

How do I install and open Movie Moments?

  1. From the Start screen, open the Windows Store. Make sure that you're connected to the Internet and that you're signed in using a Microsoft accounts.

  2. Enter Movie Moments in the search box in the upper-right corner of the Store.

  3. Tap or click Movie Moments in the results.

  4. Tap or click Install.

  5. From the Start screen, slide up from the middle of the screen or click the Down arrow Arrow pointing down near the lower-left corner.
  6. Enter Movie Moments in the search field.

  7. Tap or click Movie Moments in the results.

Tip

  • For a quicker way to open Movie Moments, you can pin it to Start. Instead of tapping or clicking Movie Moments in the last step, swipe down on or right-click it. Then tap or click Pin to Start. Now to open it, you can go to Start and tap or click the Movie Moments tile.

How does Movie Moments work?

  1. From the Start screen, open Movie Moments.

  2. Pick a video or take a new one. If you have videos in your Pictures folder, they'll appear on this page.

  3. You can do any of these things when making your movie:

    • Delete scenes: Move the handles to where you want the movie to start and stop. Finished movies need to be 60 seconds or less.

    • Add captions and a title: Tap or click the Caption button, enter your text, and then tap or click Done. You can select a word or phrase to emphasize it and freeze that frame.

    • Change the style of the title and captions: Tap or click the Caption button, tap or click Styles, and then pick the style for your movie.

    • Add music: Tap or click Music, and then choose a song.

  4. Tap or click Preview. While previewing your movie, you'll see all of the effects and hear the soundtrack.

  5. Do any of the following:

    • Make changes: Tap or click Edit, make the changes, and then preview it again.

    • Save your movie: Tap or click Save. It’s saved in the same folder as the original video.

    • Post or email your movie: Tap or click Share.

    • Start a new movie: Swipe up from the bottom edge or right-click, and then tap or click New movie.

  • Check the Windows Store on your PC for more apps that share movies.

How long can my movie be?

The original video can be up to 20 minutes. A finished movie needs to be between 1 and 60 seconds.

How do I edit the length?

Keep the final movie to 60 seconds or less by removing scenes from the beginning, middle, or end.

To trim scenes from the beginning or end

  • Move the handles at the left and right ends of the timeline to the new start and end points you want.

To trim scenes from the middle

  1. Move the playhead to the end of a section you want to keep. The playhead is the circle underneath the Caption button.

  2. Swipe in from the bottom edge to see the app commands.
    (If you're using a mouse, right-click within the app.)

  3. Do one of the following:

    • If the playhead is in an active section, tap or click Split.

    • If the playhead is outside of an active section, tap or click Create section.

  4. Adjust the handles as needed.

The final movie will include what’s in the active sections.

To merge sections

  • Drag the handle at the end of one section past the start of the next section.

How do I change the style or text of the title and captions?

To change the style

  1. Tap or click the Caption button.

  2. Tap or click Style. (If you don't see it, tap or click the More button.) The new style applies to the title and captions for the entire movie, not just the current caption.

  3. Tap or click Done.

  4. Tap or click Preview to see your changes.

Note

  • For some styles, the font isn't available in all langauges. When that happens, the style uses a different font.

To edit or remove a title or caption

  1. Tap or click that caption’s dot. A thumbnail of the caption appears.

  2. Tap or click the thumbnail.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • Edit the caption, and then tap or click Done.

    • Remove the caption by tapping or clicking Remove caption. (If you don't see the Remove caption buton, tap or click the More button.)

  4. When you're ready to see your changes, tap or click Preview.

How do I add music or mute the audio?

To add a song

  1. Tap or click Music.

  2. (Optional) You can get songs from Movie Moments by tapping or clicking Download recommended songs.

  3. Pick one of the recommended songs, or tap or click Pick a song from my collection and select one of your own songs.

  4. When you want to hear the music with your movie, tap or click Preview.

Note

  • Adjusting where the song starts isn’t supported at this time.

To mute the video’s audio

  1. Tap or click Music.

  2. Tap or click Mute audio from video.

  3. Tap or click in the app to dismiss the Music options.

How do I see my changes?

To see your changes, tap or click Preview. Then you’ll see how the effects look for your titles and captions and hear the music play with your movie.

If you want to change something while you're previewing the movie, tap or click Edit, make your changes, and then tap or click Preview again.

How do I start a new movie?

When you open the app, you can:

  • Tap or click a video. The options shown here are videos in your Pictures folder.

  • Tap or click Pick a video to browse for an existing video.

  • Tap or click Take a video to record a video with your webcam.

When you’re previewing a movie, you can swipe up from the bottom edge or right-click, and then tap or click New movie. This takes you to where you can pick a video or record a new one.

How do I quit working on a video?

While you’re making changes to your video, you can stop working on that and go start a new movie. Swipe up from the bottom edge or right-click, and then tap or click Cancel movie. This takes you to where you can pick a video or record a new one.
