How do I remove Family Safety?

To remove Family Safety, first uninstall the Family Safety Filter from every computer you've installed it on. Then, sign in to the Family Safety website with the same Microsoft account you used to install it and remove the primary parent's account. This will remove the entire family from Family Safety.

To uninstall the Family Safety Filter from computers running Windows 7

  1. Click the Start button Picture of the Start button, click Control Panel, and then, under Programs, click Uninstall a program.
  2. Click Windows Essentials, and then click Uninstall/Change. If you're prompted, click Continue.

  3. Select the check box next to Family Safety, and then click Continue.

  4. Follow the instructions on your screen.

  5. After the Family Safety Filter has been uninstalled, restart the computer.

To uninstall the Family Safety Filter from computers running Windows Vista

  1. Click the Start button Picture of the Start button, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
  2. Click Windows Essentials, and then click Uninstall. If you're prompted, click Continue.

  3. Select the check box next to Family Safety, and then click Continue.

  4. Follow the instructions on your screen.

  5. After the Family Safety Filter has been uninstalled, restart the computer.

To uninstall the Family Safety Filter from computers running Windows XP

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.

  2. In the Currently installed programs box, click Windows Essentials, and then click Remove. If you're prompted, click Continue.

  3. Select the check box next to Family Safety, and then click Continue.

  4. Follow the instructions on your screen.

  5. After the Family Safety Filter has been uninstalled, restart the computer.


After uninstalling the software, sign in to Family Safety and remove the primary parent's account.

To remove the primary parent's account

  1. On any computer, go to the Family Safety website and sign in with the Microsoft account of the primary parent (the parent who installed Family Safety).

  2. Under Family Summary, click Remove a family member.

  3. Select the check box next to the name of the primary parent, click Remove, and then click Remove again.
