Installing Internet Explorer 11

Internet Explorer comes with your Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 PC – you don't need to download or install any additional software. Make sure that you've set Internet Explorer as your default browser and then learn the basics of how to use your new browser.

Install new versions automatically

If you've agreed to receive automatic upgrades to Internet Explorer, the latest version of the browser for your operating system will be installed by Windows Update when it's available. Learn more about your version of Internet Explorer and automatic upgrades.

Turn off Internet Explorer

As Internet Explorer is a Windows feature, you can't uninstall it, but you can turn it off. Here's how:

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, then tap Search.
    (If you're using a mouse, point to the bottom-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, then click Search.)

  2. Enter Windows features in the search box, tap or click Settings, then tap or click Turn Windows features on or off.

  3. In the Windows Features dialogue box, untick the Internet Explorer 11 checkbox.
