By adding a language, you can change the language that you use to read and write in Windows, apps, and the web.

Adding a language

To change your Windows display language or add a keyboard for typing, first add a language to your language list.

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, then tap Change PC settings.
    (If you're using a mouse, point to the bottom-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click Settings, then click Change PC settings.)

  2. Tap or click Time and language, tap or click Region and language, then tap or click Add a language.

  3. Browse for the language you want, and then tap or click it to add it to your language list.

Download and install language packs

You'll need to download the language pack if you want to make a language your Windows display language (that's the language you see most often in Windows and apps).

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, then tap Change PC settings.
    (If you're using a mouse, point to the bottom-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click Settings, then click Change PC settings.)

  2. Tap or click Time and language, and then tap or click Region and language.

  3. Tap or click a language that says Language pack available underneath, and then tap or click Options.

  4. Tap or click Download. The download process might take a while, depending on your PC and the size of the language pack.

Change your Windows display language

To change your Windows display language (that's the language you see most often in Windows and apps), first add a language, download and install the language pack, and then follow these steps.

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, then tap Change PC settings.
    (If you're using a mouse, point to the bottom-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click Settings, then click Change PC settings.)

  2. Tap or click Time and language, and then tap or click Region and language.

  3. Tap or click the language that you want to set as your display language.

  4. Tap or click Set as primary to move the language to the top of the list. If the language can become your Windows display language, you'll see Will be display language after next sign-in appear under the language.

  5. Sign out and then sign back in to finish.

Switch between keyboards or input methods

When you add a language to your language list, a keyboard or input method is also added so you can type in that language. You can type with any of the keyboards you've added by switching between input methods. To switch between keyboards or input methods:

  • On a standard keyboard, press the Windows logo key Windows logo key +Spacebar.
  • On a touch screen, tap or click the touch keyboard icon Taskbar touch keyboard iconon the desktop taskbar, tap or click the language abbreviation, then tap or click the keyboard you want to switch to.

  • On the desktop taskbar, tap or click the language abbreviation in the notification area at the far right of the taskbar, then tap or click the keyboard you want to switch to.

Add a keyboard layout for a language

You can add a keyboard layout to a language if you want to use a different keyboard than the one that comes with the language.

To add a keyboard layout for a language

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, then tap Change PC settings.
    (If you're using a mouse, point to the bottom-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click Settings, then click Change PC settings.)

  2. Tap or click Time and language, and then tap or click Region and language.

  3. Tap or click the language you want to add a keyboard to, and then tap or click Options.

  4. Tap or click Add a keyboard, browse the input method list for the keyboard layout you want to use, and then tap or click it.

To make a keyboard your default keyboard

To set a keyboard as your default keyboard so you don't have to switch input methods to enter text with it, follow these steps:

  1. Open Language in Control Panel by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering Add a language in the search box, and then selecting Add a language.

  2. Tap or click Advanced settings.

  3. Under Override for default input method, choose the keyboard layout you'd like to be your default keyboard, and then tap or click Save.
