Reading List app for Windows: FAQ

Reading List is an app where you can keep track of content that you want to come back to later from the web or your favourite apps. It organises the content you share to it in chronological order, displaying titles and images from the content so the things you've added to Reading List are easy to find later.

To make sure that you always have the most recent version of Reading List, sign in to your PC with a Microsoft account and turn on automatic app updates.

How do I add content to Reading List?

  1. When you've found an item that you want to add to your list, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, then tap Share.
    (If you're using a mouse, point to the top-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, then click Share.)

  2. Tap or click Reading List. You'll see a preview of the content.

    Optional:
    Tap or click the drop-down menu that says Categorise. Choose a category for the item or create a new category.

  3. Tap or click Add. The item will appear in your list under Today.

Why can't I see Reading List as an option when I open the Share charm?

If you can't see Reading List as an option when you open the Share charm, the app or browser you're using doesn't share to Reading List. You can't share content from desktop apps or web browsers in the desktop to Reading List.

You can, however, share items to Reading List from many apps from the Windows Store, and from Internet Explorer if you have it set as your default browser and open it from the Start screen.

How is my Reading List organised?

Reading List shows your most recently added items first, and older items are shown in a timeline that you can scroll through. Images and titles make the content you've added recognisable as you scroll through your list.

You can also filter your list by category so that you only see items within a certain category at a time.

To filter your list by category

  1. Swipe in from the top or bottom edge.
    (If you're using a mouse, right-click within the app.)

  2. Tap or click the name of the category of items you want to see, or
    Tap or click Categories then tap or click the name of the category of items you want to see.

You can go back to viewing all items in your list by swiping up from the top or bottom edge and tapping or clicking All items.

You can search in Reading List to find specific content you've added. You can search by title, summary or the name of the app it came from.

How do I manage categories?

Reading List comes with six default categories to get you going – Finance, Food, Health, News, Sport and Travel. You can move items from one category to another, and you can add new categories and rename or delete categories. You need to use the app in full view to manage categories.

To create a new category

  1. Swipe in from the top or bottom edge.
    (If you're using a mouse, right-click within the app.)

  2. Tap or click Categories.

  3. Tap or click Add add new icon.
  4. Enter a name for the new category. Tap or click OK.

To create a new category for an item or group of items

  1. Swipe down on or right-click the item or items you want to categorise.

  2. Tap or click Categorise.

  3. Tap or click New category.

  4. Enter a name for the new category. Tap or click OK.

To change the category of an item or group of items

  1. Swipe down on or right-click the item or items you want.

  2. Tap or click Categorise.

  3. Tap or click the category you want, or
    Tap or click New category and enter the name of the category you'd like to create and tap or click OK.

To clear the category of an item or group of items

  1. Swipe down on or right-click the item or items you want.

  2. Tap or click Clear category.

To rename a category

  1. Swipe in from the top or bottom edge.
    (If you're using a mouse, right-click within the app.)

  2. Tap or click the category you want to rename.

  3. Swipe in from the bottom edge and tap or click Rename category.

  2. Tap or click Categories.

  3. Swipe down on or right-click to select the category you want to rename.

  4. Tap or click Rename category.

To delete a category and all the items in it

  1. Swipe in from the top or bottom edge.
    (If you're using a mouse, right-click within the app.)

  2. Tap or click the name of the category you want to delete.

  3. Swipe in from the bottom edge and tap or click Delete category.

  1. Swipe in from the top or bottom edge.
    (If you're using a mouse, right-click within the app.)

  2. Tap or click Categories.

  3. Swipe down on or right-click to select the category or categories you want to delete.

  4. Tap or click Delete category.

Can I share items from my list with friends?

If you want to share items you've added to your list, you can do so from within Reading List.

  1. Swipe down on or right-click the item or items you want to share.

  2. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, then tap Share.
    (If you're using a mouse, point to the top-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, then click Share.)

  3. Choose how you'd like to share the items. If you want to send them by email, for example, tap or click Email.

How long can I keep items in my list?

You can keep the items in your list as long as you want to. To help save space, after 3 months items you added won't show images. You'll still be able to see their titles and descriptions and open them from your list.

How do I delete items from my list?

You can delete items from your list if you decide you don't want to hang on to them any more.

If you're using the app in full view

  1. Swipe down on or right-click the item or items that you want to delete.

  2. Tap or click Delete. The items will be removed from your list and moved to your Recently deleted folder.

If you're viewing the app as a list next to another app

  1. Swipe across or right-click the item that you want to delete.

  2. Tap or click the Delete button. The item will be removed from your list and moved to your Recently deleted folder.

If you decide you want to add an item again after you've deleted it, you can do that.

To add an item again after deleting it

  1. Swipe in from the bottom edge.
    (If you're using a mouse, right-click within the app.)

  2. Tap or click Recently deleted. You'll see a list of all the items you deleted over a set period of time – by default, the past 30 days.

  3. Swipe to select or right-click to select the item you want to add back.

  4. Tap or click Add back. The item will be added to your list.

If you want to permanently delete items, you can do that too. You need to use the app in full view to be able to permanently delete items.

To permanently delete items

  1. Swipe in from the bottom edge.
    (If you're using a mouse, right-click within the app.)

  2. Tap or click Recently deleted. You'll see a list of all the items that you've deleted over a set period of time – by default, the past 30 days.

  3. Swipe down on or right-click the item or items that you want to delete.

  4. Tap or click Delete.

Note

  • Items in the Recently deleted folder will be permanently deleted after 30 days by default.

How do I change the amount of time before deleted items are permanently removed?

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, then tap Settings.
    (If you're using a mouse, point to the bottom-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, then click Settings.)

  2. Tap or click Options.

  3. From the drop-down menu, select how long you want to keep recently deleted items for – 10 days, 30 days or 60 days.

How do I sync my Reading List across my Windows devices?

If you set up your PC with recommended settings and sign in with a Microsoft account, your list will be synchronised by default.

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, then tap Change PC settings
    (If you're using a mouse, point to the bottom-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click Settings, then click Change PC settings.)

  2. Tap or click OneDrive, then tap or click Sync settings.

  3. Make sure that Sync settings on this PC and App data are turned On.

  • You must be signed in to your PC with a Microsoft account in order to sync your settings across devices. For more information, see All about Microsoft account.

How many items can I add to my list?

You can add as many items to your list as you like. There is a limit to how many items you can sync to multiple devices. If you hit that limit, you'll get a notification that new items you add won't be synchronised to other devices until you have permanently deleted some items from your list.
