Watching videos

There are several options for playing videos on your PC. Which app will work best for you depends on the type of video you want to watch.

Watching personal videos

The Photos, OneDrive and Camera apps are great for playing your personal videos and all come with Windows 8.1. They display them full screen, and you can quickly switch between watching and trimming videos. Open these apps by tapping or clicking their tiles on the Start screen or by searching and then opening the app.

Photos app:

  • You can use this app to watch videos that are in your Pictures library and on your OneDrive.

  • If you're looking at your Pictures library and want to see your OneDrive folders, tap or click Pictures library in the top-left corner. You can also switch between the Details and Thumbnails views by tapping or clicking the buttons in the top-right corner.

  • If you have videos on your camera or phone, you can import them using the Photos app.

OneDrive app:

  • You can use this app to watch videos that are on your OneDrive and in your Pictures library.

  • If you're looking at your OneDrive folder and want to see your Pictures library, tap or click OneDrive in the top-left corner. You can also switch between the Details and Thumbnails views by tapping or clicking the buttons in the top-right corner.

  • If you automatically upload videos you take with the Camera app to OneDrive, you'll find them in the Camera roll folder.

Camera app:

  • You can watch videos you’ve taken with this app in the camera roll. Swipe to the right or click the arrow on the left side of the screen to start looking through your recent photos and videos. You can also swipe up from the bottom edge or right-click, then tap or click Camera roll.

Notes

  • The Photos app shows photos and videos in the Pictures library on your PC. This is primarily your Pictures folder, but can also include external drives, shared network folders and other folders on your PC. If you’d like to see photos from other folders, move them to the Pictures folder or add them to your Pictures library. To learn how, see Libraries: FAQ.

  • Your camera roll only appears on OneDrive if you automatically upload photos or videos. See Storing photos in OneDrive for how to set this up.

Watching films and TV programmes

Use the Video app to watch films and TV programmes that you've bought from Xbox Video, or ones that you already own and have moved into your Videos library.

  1. From the Start screen, open the Video app.

  2. Scroll to the left, tap or click my videos, then tap or click a video to watch it.

Another option for watching films, TV programmes and DVDs is Windows Media Center. Some editions of Windows include Windows Media Center. If you don't have Windows Media Center, follow these steps to get the Windows Media Center Pack.
