Make a Windows SideShow-compatible device more secure

To make your Windows SideShow-compatible device more secure, follow these security basics.

Note

Note

  • The following settings are specific to devices that run Microsoft firmware. Windows SideShow-compatible devices that do not run Microsoft firmware, such as mobile phones and keyboard displays, are unlikely to contain these settings.

To lock the device

To help protect information on your device, set the device to automatically lock after a short period of time. After the device has locked, you must enter your personal identification number (PIN) to unlock it and access data. If your system administrator set your device to automatically lock, you can still create a custom PIN to unlock the device.

Note

Note

  • You must have a Windows SideShow-compatible device installed before you can complete the following procedure.

  1. Open Windows Sideshow by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, and then clicking Windows SideShow.

  2. In the left pane, click the name of the device that you want to change settings for.

  3. Select the Lock the device check box, and then select the length of time that you want the device to remain inactive before the device locks.

  4. In the Enter PIN and Confirm PIN boxes, type the same four-digit PIN, and then click OK.

To delete information from the device

Some devices continue to work after you turn off your computer or log off from Windows. For increased security, make sure that information is deleted from the device when you log off from your computer.

Turning on this setting may limit the usefulness of the device because you won't be able to access information such as e-mail messages and calendar appointments when you're not logged on to your computer. However, information is restored to the device when you log on to your computer again.
