Send and receive Outlook.com email from an app

You can manage your Outlook.com account from many popular mail apps. Here's how:

Windows 8 Mail App

To set up your Outlook.com account:

  1. On the Start screen, open the Mail app.

  2. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, then tap Settings. (If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, then click Settings.

  3. Tap or click Accounts, then tap or click Add an Account.

  4. Tap or click Outlook and enter your Outlook.com email address and password.

  5. Tap or click Connect.

  • If the app can’t find account settings, you can manually enter Exchange ActiveSync settings (see below).

  • If the app doesn’t download email after you add your account, open Settings in the mail app and click on your account name. Make sure that under Content to sync, the Email checkbox is checked.

Windows Live Mail 2011 & 2012

To set up your Outlook.com account:

  1. Open Windows Live Mail 2011 or 2012.

  2. On the Accounts tab, click Email.

  3. Enter your email address, password, and display name, then click Next.

  4. (Windows Live Mail 2011 only) From the Server type dropdown, select Windows Live Hotmail, then click Next.

  5. Click Finish.

  • If you are using Outlook.com with an email address domain other than hotmail.com, live.com, msn.com or outlook.com, turn on Manually configure server settings in step 3.

Windows Live Mail 2009

To set up your Outlook.com account:

  1. Open Windows Live Mail 2009.

  2. In the lower left, click Mail, then click Add e-mail account.

  3. Enter your email address, password, and display name, then click Next.

  4. In the drop down next to My incoming mail server is a, select HTTP server, then click Next.

  5. Click Finish.

Apps that support Exchange ActiveSync

If your email app supports Exchange ActiveSync and you need to configure it manually, use the following settings:

  • Server address: s.outlook.com

  • Domain: <leave empty>

  • User name: Your email address

  • Password: Your password

  • TLS/SSL encryption required: Yes

Apps that support POP3 or SMTP

If your email app doesn’t support Exchange ActiveSync but does support POP3 or SMTP, use the following settings:

  • Incoming (POP3) Server

    • Server address: pop3.live.com

    • Port: 995

    • SSL Encryption: Yes

  • Outgoing (SMTP) Server

    • Server address: smtp.live.com

    • Port: 25 (or 587 if 25 is blocked)

    • Authentication: Yes

    • TLS or SSL Secure Encrypted Connection: Yes

  • User name: Your email address

  • Password: Your password

  • If you don’t want email to be deleted from your Outlook.com inbox after it’s downloaded to your email app, select the Leave a copy of messages on the server option.

Even if you accidentally set up POP3 to delete messages after downloading them, Outlook.com will save a copy of the mail in a folder called POP until you verify the POP3 delete command.

To verify the POP3 delete command:

  1. Sign in to Outlook.com

  2. Click the Options icon Options icon, then click More mail settings.
  3. Under Managing Your Account, click POP and deleting downloaded messages.

  4. Select whether to delete messages, or override the POP delete request and save a copy in the POP folder.

  5. Click Save.
