Talk to family and friends on Skype in Outlook.com

Outlook.com customers can now talk to friends and family with Skype's chat, voice, and video features.

When you merge your Microsoft and Skype accounts, you automatically have access to Skype through the web on Outlook.com.

How can I check if Skype is available to me?

  1. In Outlook.com, click the messaging icon Messaging icon.

  2. If you see the Skype icon at the bottom of the messaging pane, you can use Skype.

I merged my Skype and Microsoft accounts, but I’m not seeing Skype in Outlook.com. What should I do?

There might be a temporary problem with linking to Skype. Wait a few minutes, refresh your browser, and check again.

Where can I sign in to Skype?

You can sign in to Skype through Outlook.com, People, Calendar or OneDrive.

How do I start chatting with a Skype contact?

To start a chat session:

  1. In Outlook.com, click the messaging icon Messaging icon.
  2. Click Start new conversation.

    You should see a list of your Skype contacts.

  3. Click the name of the person you want to talk to.

  4. If the person is available on Skype, send them a message or give them a call.

Note

  • Your contact will receive the message through their Skype desktop app anywhere in the world or, if they are using Outlook.com, through the Messaging pane.

How do I start a video or voice call with a Skype contact?

If you're reading an email from a contact in Outlook.com, hover your mouse over the contacts’ picture, then click the Skype audio or video call buttons.

You can also do it this way:

  1. In Outlook.com, click the messaging icon. You should see a list of your Skype contacts.

  2. Select the name of the person you want to talk to. If the person is available and video or voice calls are supported, you'll see the Video and Call buttons.

  3. Click the Video or Call button to start the call.

    The first time that you start a video or voice call, you’ll be prompted to install the Skype plugin. Accept the terms and conditions, and install the plugin.

  • If your browser doesn’t support plugins, the video and voice icons won't display. Use the Skype desktop app for video or voice calls.

  • If you get the error message, “Sorry, Skype for Outlook.com doesn’t yet work with this browser. Please download the latest version of Skype for Windows 8.1 to get the best experience" install the free Skype for Windows 8.1 app from Windows Store.

  • Your friend will receive the call on their Skype desktop app anywhere in the world or through Outlook.com.

  • Voice or video calls aren't supported on Windows RT 8.1.

When I click the Video or Call button, the Skype plugin doesn't start. What should I do?

Try again. If that doesn't work, uninstall the Skype plugin from your computer:

  1. Open Control Panel

    • In Windows 8 and Windows RT, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Search (or if you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search), enter Control Panel in the search box, and then tap or click Control Panel. Then click Uninstall a program

    • In Windows 7 or Windows Vista, click the Start button, click Control Panel, and then click Uninstall a program.

    • In Windows XP, click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.

  2. Click Skype Web Plugin, and then click Uninstall or Remove.

  3. In Outlook.com, click the Video or Call button in the messaging pane. You'll be prompted to install the plugin again.

I have contacts that use more than one messenger service. How do I tell Outlook.com that I want to use Skype?

  1. In Outlook.com, click the messaging icon Messaging icon.
  2. On the messaging pane, click the icon (ellipsis).

  3. Click the Chatting on arrow, and then select Skype.

I know a contact is available on Skype, but they don’t appear available in Outlook.com. What can I do?

  1. In Outlook.com, click the messaging icon Messaging icon.

  2. If you see the Skype icon at the bottom of the messaging pane, you can use Skype.

  3. Wait a few minutes, refresh your screen, and try again.

  4. If you’re still having trouble, search the community forums .

I have contacts that don’t use Skype. Can I invite those contacts to use Skype through Outlook.com?

Currently, you can't invite people to be Skype contacts through Outlook.com or People; you need to use the Skype desktop app.

Can my Skype contacts call or chat with me through Outlook.com?

Yes. When you’re signed in to Outlook.com and Skype, your Skype contacts can contact you. You can chat through the messaging pane. When you receive an incoming video or voice call, the Skype plugin will start.

A Skype contact is sending me abusive or offensive content. What do I do?
