View and import photos

There are lots of ways to see your photos in Windows 8.1. The way you view and edit photos is the same in several apps, so you can use the app that is most convenient for you. You can also see more of your favorite photos when you use them on your lock screen and in the Photos tile.

The Photos and OneDrive apps show all of the photos in your Pictures library and in your OneDrive. You can also use those apps to import photos from your camera or phone. For more info on importing photos and videos, see Import photos and videos from a camera, phone, or DVD.

See your photos in the Photos, OneDrive, or Camera app

These apps are great for looking at your photos. Photos are displayed full screen, and you can quickly switch between editing and viewing. Open these apps by tapping or clicking their tiles on the Start screen or by searching and then opening the app.

Photos app:

  • You can use this app to view photos that are in your Pictures library and in your OneDrive. If you want to switch between your OneDrive folders and your Pictures library folders, tap or click the toggle in the upper-left corner.

  • If you have photos on your camera or phone, you can use this app to import them.

OneDrive app:

  • You can use this app to view photos that are on your OneDrive and in your Pictures library. If you want to switch between your OneDrive folders and your Pictures library folders, tap or click the toggle in the upper-left corner.

  • If you automatically upload photos you take with the Camera app to OneDrive, you'll find them in the Camera roll folder.

Camera app:

  • You can see photos you’ve taken with the Camera app in the camera roll. Swipe up from the bottom edge or right-click to see the app commands, and then tap or click Camera roll.

Note

  • The Photos app shows photos in the Pictures library on your PC. This is primarily your Pictures folder, but can also include external drives, shared network folders, and other folders on your PC. If you’d like to see photos from other folders, move them to the Pictures folder or add them to your Pictures library. To learn how, see Libraries: FAQ.

  • Your camera roll only appears on OneDrive if you automatically upload photos or videos. For more info, see Store photos in OneDrive.

Personalize your PC with photos

Add a personal touch to your PC by using your favorite photos as your lock screen, the Photos tile, and the picture you draw on to sign in.

  • You can set the lock screen and Photos tile when you’re viewing a photo in the Photos app. Swipe up from the bottom edge or right-click to see the app commands, and then tap or click Set as.

  • You can change your picture password and lock screen from PC settings. To learn how, see Personalize your PC.
