To change a Microsoft account password online

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account, and then select Security & privacy.

  2. Select Change password.

  3. Enter your current password, then the new password you want, then enter the new password again.

  4. Select Save.

To change a password used to sign in to Windows

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings.
    (If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.)

  2. Select Accounts, and then tap or click Sign-in options.

  3. Under Password, select Change. Enter your current password, and then select Next.

  4. Do one of the following:

    • If you want to change the password for a Microsoft account, enter your current password again. Enter and reenter your new password, and then select Next.

    • If you want to change the password for a local account, enter and reenter the new password, enter a password hint to help you remember it, and then select Next.

  5. Select Finish.

To change a password when the PC is connected to a domain

If your PC is connected to a domain, your system administrator might have specific password requirements to help keep your network more secure. To change your domain password, you might need to ask the system administrator for help. Here's how to change your password on a domain.

  1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, and then tap or click Change a password.

    • If you're using a tablet without a standard keyboard, this step might vary. Check with your PC's manufacturer for help.

  2. Enter your old password. Enter and reenter your new password, and then press Enter.
