Reset Internet Explorer settings

You can reset Internet Explorer settings to return them to the state they were in when Internet Explorer was first installed on your PC. This can be useful for troubleshooting problems that might be caused by settings changed after installation. Resetting Internet Explorer isn't reversible, and all previous settings are lost after reset.

To reset Internet Explorer settings

  1. Close all Internet Explorer and Explorer windows that are currently open.

  2. Reopen Internet Explorer for the desktop. Changing your settings will affect both Internet Explorer and Internet Explorer for the desktop.

  3. Tap or click the Tools Tools button, and then tap or click Internet options.

  4. Tap or Click the Advanced tab, and then tap or click Reset.

  5. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, tap or click Reset.

  6. When Internet Explorer finishes applying default settings, tap or click Close, and then tap or click OK.

  7. Close Internet Explorer. Your changes will take effect the next time you open Internet Explorer.

Reset browsing history settings

Internet Explorer stores the following types of browsing history info when you browse the web:

  • Temporary Internet files

  • Cookies

  • A history of the websites you've visited

  • Info you've entered into the Address bar or websites

  • Saved passwords

  • Temporary info stored by add-ons

Resetting Internet Explorer settings won't affect your browsing history, unless you select the Delete personal settings check box during reset. If you only want to view or delete your browsing history, you don't need to reset all Internet Explorer settings.

Show all

To view browsing history

  1. Open Internet Explorer for the desktop.

  2. Tap or click the Favorites button, and then tap or click the History tab.

To delete browsing history

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen (if you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen and move the mouse pointer down), and then tap or click Settings.

  2. Tap or click Internet Options.

  3. Under Delete Browsing History, tap or click Delete.

To delete browsing history in Internet Explorer for the desktop

  1. Open Internet Explorer for the desktop.

  2. Tap or click the Tools Tools button, point to Safety, and then tap or click Delete browsing history.

  3. Select the check box next to each category of info you want to delete.

  4. Tap or click Delete.

To stop saving browsing history

  1. Open Internet Explorer for the desktop.

  2. Tap or click the Tools Tools button, and then tap or click Internet options.

  3. Under Browsing history, tap or click Settings.

  4. On the History tab, set the number of days to keep pages in history to 0, and then tap or click OK.

  4. In the Delete Browing History dialog box, select the check boxes for the info you want to delete, click Delete, and then click OK.
