How to upgrade to Windows 8

Windows 8 includes the beautiful new Start screen with tiles that show you at a glance what's going on with your apps and friends. The familiar desktop you already know is of course still there. Your PC will start up more quickly, and browsing the web is faster and more secure. And you can download thousands of apps from the Windows Store—many of which are free.

Here's how to upgrade

  • Find out if your PC can run Windows 8 by tapping or clicking the Get started button on the Buy Windows page. Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant will download (it's free *). It will tell you if your PC can run Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro, and it will walk you though the installation step by step. You'll also get a report that shows which of your current apps and devices will work with Windows 8.

  • Buy and download the Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro upgrade by entering your payment info and following the on-screen steps.

  • Install the upgrade on your PC by following the rest of the steps.

  • Set up Windows 8 by choosing a few settings, including your favorite colors.

We'll guide you through each step.

* Internet service provider (ISP) fees might apply.
