Windows Update error 80246002

If you receive Windows Update error 80246002 while checking for updates, it means that files required by Windows Update might be damaged. This often can be corrected by renaming the Windows Update download folder, and then running Windows Update again.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

If running the troubleshooter doesn't solve the problem, download and install the specific update that's causing the error. To do this, follow these steps to identify, download, and install the update you need.

Download and install an update manually

  1. Open Windows Update by swiping in from the right edge of the screen (or, if you're using a mouse, pointing to the lower-right corner of the screen and moving the mouse pointer up), tapping or clicking Settings, tapping or clicking Change PC settings, and then tapping or clicking Update and recovery.

  2. Tap or click View your update history.

  3. Look through the list for updates that failed to install, and then tap or click the entries in the list to get more details.

  4. In the details, look for error code 80246002 and note the number that begins with "KB."

  5. Go to the Microsoft Download Center website, and in the search box, enter the "KB" number you noted in step 4, and then press Enter.

  6. In the list of search results, click the Knowledge Base (KB) article link to go to the download page. If there's more than one listing, look for a link that goes to the Microsoft Download Center.

  7. If there are multiple versions on the download page, search for the appropriate one for your PC. Tap or click the Download button, and save the update to your desktop.

  8. When prompted, tap or click Open to install the update.

  • If the installation fails, the update might not be the correct one for your PC or version of Windows. Check that you're downloading the correct update and try steps 6 and 7 again.
