Add birthdays to your Outlook.com calendar

Calendar in Outlook.com has a dedicated birthday calendar that automatically populates with the known birthdays of everyone in your contact list. You can also add birthdays at any time.

To add a birthday

  1. In Calendar, click the arrow next to New, and then click Birthday.

  2. Enter the person's name and birthday information, and then click Save.

The new birthday appears in your birthday calendar.

Calendar is connected to your contact list in People

  • If you add a birthday to a contact in People, the birthday will be added to your calendar.

  • If you add a birthday in Calendar, and the name you enter matches someone in your contact list, the birthday will be added to their contact.

  • If you add a birthday in Calendar, and the person isn't in your contact list, they'll be added.

Other ways birthdays are added to your calendar

  • If you’ve connected your Outlook.com account to a social network like Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn, and the contact adds his or her birth date in that network.

  • When a contact adds his or her birth date to their profile and shares it with you.

To delete a birthday

There are two ways to delete a birthday.

  • In Calendar, click the event and press the Delete key.

  • In People, delete their contact or the birth date from their contact.

Other ways birthdays are deleted from your calendar

  • You’ve connected your Outlook.com account to a social network like Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn, and the contact deletes his or her birth date in that network.

  • You disconnect your Outlook.com account from the social network where you contact has his or her birthday info.

  • A contact removes his or her birth date from a profile they share with you.

To switch off birthday reminders

If you have a lot of birthday events in your calendar, you might want to turn off the reminders. Here's how:

To switch off all reminders

Here's how to switch off reminders for all events on all your calendars.

  1. Click the Options icon Options icon, and then click Options.
  2. Under Turn notifications on or off, clear the check box.

  3. Click Save.

To switch off only birthday reminders

You can switch off only birthday reminders and leave other reminders on. To do this, you must delete your birthday calendar and recreate it with a new reminder setting.

If you delete your birthday calendar you won't lose any birthday info, as all such info is in your People contact list, the person’s profile, or social networks you have added to Outlook.com.

To delete your birthday calendar

  1. Click the Options icon Options icon, and then click Options.
  2. Click Birthday calendar.

  3. Click Delete, and then click Delete again.

To recreate your birthday calendar without notifications

  1. Click the arrow next to New.

  2. Click Birthday calendar.

  3. Under Notifications, click the Delete iconDelete icon next to each notification.
  4. Click Save.

To switch off reminders for birthdays you add going forward

  1. Click the Options icon Options icon, and then click Options.
  2. Under Edit your reminder and calendar settings, click Birthday calendar.

  3. Under Notifications, click the Delete iconDelete icon next to each notification.
  4. Click Save.

Notes

  • You can't share the birthday calendar.

  • To hide the birthday (or any other) calendar, click the Options icon Options icon, then click the calendar name. Click it again to show the calendar.
