Using gadgets on a Windows SideShow-compatible device

You can use gadgets to read e-mail messages, scan top news stories, and more on your Windows SideShow-compatible device. For example, you might be able to use a gadget to play songs from your music playlists on your computer with your SideShow-compatible mobile phone.

Install gadgets

Your device may come with some gadgets already installed and turned on by the device manufacturer. Check the information that came with your device or go to the manufacturer’s website for more information.

You can install SideShow gadgets from the Windows 7 Online Gallery website. To use the gadgets you've installed, you must first turn them on for your device in Windows SideShow in Control Panel. For more information, see Turn a Windows SideShow gadget on or off.

Some desktop gadgets work with SideShow. After you add a desktop gadget that works with SideShow to the desktop, turn the gadget on in Windows SideShow in Control Panel. If a desktop gadget doesn't appear in Windows SideShow in Control Panel, you might be able to turn on SideShow for the gadget in the gadget settings. View gadgets

You can view a list of gadgets that are turned on for your device in Windows SideShow in Control Panel.

  • After you connect a Windows SideShow-compatible device to your computer, open Windows Sideshow by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, and then clicking Windows SideShow.

Gadgets that are installed by your device manufacturer might not appear in this list of gadgets.

You can also change the order in which gadgets appear on your device. For more information, see Change the order of gadgets on a Windows SideShow-compatible device.

Change gadget settings

You can change the settings for some gadgets by clicking the gadget in Windows SideShow in Control Panel, and then choosing the settings that you want. When you change settings for a gadget, those settings are changed for all of the devices installed on your computer that use that gadget.

Uninstall gadgets

You can uninstall SideShow gadgets in Programs and Features in Control Panel. If you uninstall a gadget, the gadget is uninstalled from your computer and all of the devices that are installed on your computer.

  1. Open Programs and Features by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Programs, and then clicking Programs and Features.

  2. Right-click the gadget name, and then click Uninstall.

Some gadgets might not appear in Programs and Features because they're part of another program on your computer.
