If you receive Windows Update error 800736CC while checking for updates, it is usually because the update content is invalid and potentially corrupted. This most likely is the result of a hard disk error. To resolve the problem, check for disk errors first, and then remove the temporary update files that Windows uses to identify updates for your computer. To remove the temporary files, stop the Windows Update service, delete the temporary update files, restart the Windows Update service, and then try to check for Windows updates again.

To check for disk errors

Right click the hard disk that Windows is installed on (usually drive C), and then click Properties. The drive that Windows is installed on displays the Windows icon.

For best results, don't use your computer for any other tasks while it's checking for errors.

Deleting temporary update files will help solve the problem, but it will also delete the history in Windows Update. You can still see which updates are installed on your computer by going to Installed Updates.
