Choose an audio device for text-to-speech playback

You can choose your preferred audio device for text-to-speech (printed text to spoken words) playback. It will be active only if there is at least one audio device installed. Here's how to choose an audio device for text-to-speech playback:

To choose an audio device using your mouse

  1. Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, make sure you are in Classic View, with all Control Panel icons showing. If not, click Switch to Classic View in the left pane of Control Panel.

  3. Click Speech to open the Speech Properties dialog box, and then click Audio Output.

  4. In the Text to Speech Sound Output settings dialog box, under Text to speech outlet, select Use preferred audio device. Or select Use this audio output device and click a device on the menu.

  5. Click Volume to open the Volume Control dialog box, and then move the sliders to adjust settings.

  6. Click OK to save changes, and then click the Close button in Control Panel.

To choose an audio device using your keyboard

  1. Display the Start menu by pressing Ctrl+Esc (or the Windows logo key). Then open Control Panel by pressing C.

  2. In Control Panel, make sure you are in Classic View, with all Control Panel icons showing. If not, go to the left pane of Control Panel and open Switch to Classic View by pressing Tab and then Enter. Press the arrow keys to move to Speech, and then press Enter.

  3. In the Speech Properties dialog box, move to Audio Output by pressing Alt+O.

  4. In the Text to Speech Sound Output settings dialog box, under Text to speech outlet, move to Use preferred audio device by pressing A. Or you can select Use this audio output device by pressing U, and then press Tab to move to the device list. Use the arrow keys to choose a device from the menu.

  5. Open the Volume Control dialog box by pressing Alt+V. Choose the setting level you want by pressing Tab and the arrow keys. Close the Volume Control dialog box by pressing Alt+P, X.

  6. Close the Text to Speech Sound Output Settings dialog box by pressing Tab to move to OK, and then press Enter. To close the Speech Properties dialog box, press Tab to move to OK, and then press Enter.

  7. Close Control Panel by pressing Alt+F, C.
