Windows Media Player automatically organizes files in the Player Library according to the media information available for the files.
To ensure your Player Library is well-organized and that you can find items easily, it's important that your files contain complete and accurate media information. If they don't, you can add the information.
For more information about adding media information, see Add or edit media information in Windows Media Player. For more information about the Player Library, see Getting started with Windows Media Player.
Once you have accurate media information in your files, you have a number of options for arranging files in the Player Library to make them easier for you to find. You can choose between several different display views in the Player Library, select the panes you want to appear, and then choose the columns you want to display.
For more information about finding items in the Player Library, see Find items in the Windows Media Player Library.
View options allow you to display your media in several different formats.
The navigation pane on the left side of the Player controls many of the views in the details pane. There are several view categories by default, including: Music, Videos, Pictures, and Recorded TV. If you double-click a category, there might be several more specific views available beneath the category. If you want to add or change the views available in the navigation pane, do the following:
In the Player Library, click Organize, and then click Customize navigation pane.
Do one or both of the following:
Select the check boxes for the views you want to appear in the navigation pane.
Clear the check boxes of the views you don't want to appear in the navigation pane.
When you're finished, click OK.
In the navigation pane, click the view you want.
For example, click Folder if you want to see where the items are stored on your computer.
In the list pane, you can play music or create a playlist, burn a CD or DVD, or sync a portable media device. To open and close the list pane, do the following:
To show the list pane in the Player Library, click the tab that represents the action you want to perform: Play, Burn, or Sync.
To close the list pane, click the tab that is currently open.
In the Player Library, click Organize, point to Layout, and then click Choose columns.
Select or clear the check boxes next to the column categories.
To change the order where the columns display, select a column name and then click Move Up or Move Down.
To resize a column, click the column, and then type a width in the Width of selected column (in pixels) box.
You can also resize columns on the details pane of the Player Library by clicking the right boundary of the column heading and then moving the boundary to the right or to the left.
By default, some columns are automatically hidden when you resize the Player, which leaves room for the most important columns to remain visible. If you want all columns to remain visible when you resize the Player, clear the Hide columns automatically check box.
If you want to change your customized columns view back to the default view, right-click any column header in the Player Library, and then click Restore columns.
