Change what happens when you press the power button on your computer

There are two ways to change what happens when you press the power button on your computer. You can change what happens when you press the power button on your computer case (or the edge of your laptop) and you can change what happens when you press the Shut down button on the Start menu.

Change what happens when you press the power button

You can choose what happens when you press the power button on your computer case (or the edge of your laptop). The computer can shut down, sleep, hibernate, or do nothing. You can apply the same setting to all of your power plans or you can apply different settings to individual power plans.

Change what happens when you press the Shut down button

Besides changing what the power button on your computer case does, you can also change the default action that occurs when you click the Shut down button on the Start menu. Changing what happens when you press this button has no affect on the settings for the power button on your computer case.

To change the default option on the Start menu

By default, clicking the Shut down button on the Start menu shuts down your computer. You can change this so that instead of shutting down, your computer logs you off, locks, restarts, goes into a sleep state, or goes into hibernation.

  1. Open Taskbar and Start Menu Properties by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Taskbar and Start Menu.

  2. Click the Start Menu tab.

  3. In the Power button action list, click an item, and then click OK.

When you change the action of the Shut down button, the name of the button changes to reflect the new action.
